Festivals

FESTIVAL

Festival is an event, usually and ordinarily staged by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community.

Among many religions, a feast is a set of celebrations in honour of God or gods. A feast and a festival are historically interchangeable. However, the term "feast" has also entered common secular parlance as a synonym for any large or elaborate meal. When used as in the meaning of a festival, most often refers to a religious festival rather than a film or art festival.

In the Christian liturgical calendar there are two principal feasts, properly known as the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas) and the Feast of the Resurrection, (Easter). In the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican liturgical calendars there are a great number of lesser feasts throughout the year commemorating saints, sacred events, doctrines, etc.

The House - Cambridge Folk Museum

The Cambridge Folk Museum

Before we went to the Museum's we were not told what they were like and what they were like inside. When we all arrived at the Cambridge Folk Museum we realised that the art in the gallery was more modern. Inside the Museum there was a house that we didnt know existed before we were told about it. We were told that we were allowed to visit the house and walk around it. When we entered the house my first thought was that the house was very small. However as we got further and further into the house it gradually got bigger and bigger and had many different rooms. All the furniture in the house is not for sale but just on show to show how the people who owned the house decorated it.

Film Review - Alice and Wonderland

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Last weekend i went to see Alice In Wonderland in 3D at cineworld in Cambridge. I really enjoyed this film because even though most parts of the film were annimated, i found it really funny and i thought that it had a good story line. There has been mixed reviews over Alice and Wonderland in the papers recently, and quite a lot of cinemas aren't even showing the film because the Dvd is coming out soon.

Cast
Directed by Tim Burton
Times Online Review
Here is a clip from the Times Online Website.
Each scene offers a British luvvie in phantasmagorical disguise. Alan Rickman voices the caterpillar, and perhaps inevitably the Cheshire Cat speaks with the smug voice of Stephen Fry. Tweedledum and Tweedledee are a digitally manipulated Matt Lucas, and Paul Whitehouse is the disturbed March Hare, prone to throwing crockery. The squeaky dormouse, who pokes out the Bandersnatch’s eyeball with a needle, is our very own Barbara Windsor.
Unfortunately, Johnny Depp has too much of Willy Wonka lingering about him as he plays the Mad Hatter, who is promoted to a modern buddy role with Alice. Anne Hathaway’s character as the White Queen was, said Burton, based on Nigella Lawson. This running joke becomes clear in the lipsmacking potion scene.

Presenter Kat Godfrey was also awarded Gold for Best Female, and the Weekend Breakfast team picked up a Bronze for Best Entertainment Programming. Previous years' awards have included a silver for the "Cambridge Onion" in the Comedy/Drama category, Gold and Bronze awards for our technical innovations such as our user-friendly online audio player, a Gold award for Val Mellon's unique "Mellon 'till Midnight" entertainment show, a Silver award for our Varsity Rugby coverage, and many other nominations for a variety of entertainment and specialist music programmes.

In 2003 we won a silver medal for our live coverage of the May Bumps inter-collegiate rowing competition. CUR1350 provides a source of high quality essential entertainment, as well as a tried and tested route into professional radio for members.

we cover other sporting events in Cambridge such as the Varsity Football and Rugby matches. Our coverage of Cambridge life goes beyond sport: we cover cinema and theatre in the city, and reguarly conduct outside broadcasts from the best venues in Cambridge for students.

Progress Reportha

Recently i have been researching an event called The Youth Takeover. I have been doing this by using the internet and websites such as facebook which have groups giving me information. The other day i sent an email to Simon Bates asking him about the Youth Takeover. I would like to have an interview with him to talk about this so that will know about it more.

Junction on the 11/03/10

Yesterday we went to the junction in the afternoon. Before we went we prepared questions that we were going to ask the people who work at the junction. We all thought that we were going to be interviewing them, however this was the other way round. We were all asked to pick one of the jobs from the junction and then we had to go and get interviewed by the people that have the job. This went bad because we didn't think that we would be doing this and some people were not happy that they had to do that because it was not what we had been told we were going to do.

Session 2 initial ideas

Who will be your target audience

1. Our group thought that the target audience should be of all ages. We decided this so that everyone could read the news paper and be interested.

2. What are your initial ideas for the visual style & design features?

Our groups initial ideas were that we should make the newspaper very eye-catching for the target audience. This would include bold italic and underlining effects.

Dress rehersal

At samba yesterday the samba rehersal went very well. At the start we played our piece then towards the end of the session we sorted out where we were going to stand in the performance in cambridge. The outfits worked well and because the size of the tshirts were very big they fitted over our normal clothes and looked alright. The boys masks though were too small and didn't fit over their faces which didn't work. If we had more time i would say that we should do more to the costumes that we are wearing. I also think that we could try to learn a different style of samba to add more difficulty to our performance.

Wednesday, 3 February 2010

Today i am going to look over the internet and see if i can find the cheapest white t-shirts possible. I have just discovered 'Fruit of the Loom' t-shirts, they are not very expensive but overall we don't think we have enough money to pay for everything as well as the t-shirts. here is a picture of the t-shirt that i found
the cost of it is £1.22

CAMBRIDGE RESEARCH REPORT

Acro Iris Samba create a sense of band identity by all wearing jumpers that say the name of the band on them. I really like this piece because they all look like they are really enjoying them selves and do not look embarrased. It is good not to look embarrased because then the public will realise you are not taking it seriously. Occasionally you can see certain members of the band looking at each other so they know how to keep in time. They also have a leader who had a seperate drum which is leading the samba band, this helps the band members to know what section they have got to in the song. By stepping from side to side and dancing is involving the audience to join in with what they are doing and dance to the music. The band is arranged with the big drums which a low sound at the back which you cannot always see, then there is the smaller drums which have a lighter sound. Right at the front there is the little drums and the go go bells. There is also a stage at the back which the big drummers are standing on so that they are noticible to the audience.

Thudbox - Bal A

Thudbox are a smaller group than Acro Iris and tend to perform in clubs, pubs and at festivals. At the start of the song it is just the lady playing a tune on the piano sort of thing. Then others gradually start to join in and create a beat. There doesnt look like there is a main leader who is telling the band what to do which means that they are all managing to keep in time with each other and know when they have to move onto different section ect.. The band don't seem to have a layout on the stage but the bigger drums seem to be at the back than at the front. Lots of light affects have been used at the start of the piece it is very dark and then gradually it gets lighter. It gets lighter when they change to the 'jungle' style of samba and then gets darker again. This marks the change in the piece of music and adds to the affect.

T-shirt.... what are we going to now?

Because we don't have enough money to get new t-shirts we are going to use our old creative and media tops that we had designed earlier in the year. This is a cheaper idea and we are going to have to think of a way to get Chloe's photoshop design onto the t-shirts.

samba this week.

here is a picture of the cheap t-shirt that i found on google. It is a 'Fruit of the Loom' t-shirt. It costs £1.34 per t-shirt.

SAMBA IN CAMBRIDGE RESERCH REPORT

Acro Iris Samba

Sunday, 17 January 2010

I really liked this video because it was a big group of people playing but they still managed to keep in time with each other. In this video they aren't wearing costumes but they look like they are all from different backgrounds or diferent places because they aren't all wearing the same thing.

What was campaign day like?

On campaign day i wanted to see how many signatures i could get as possible. I also wanted to raise awareness about my campaign so people would know it existed. I got quite a few signatures, i got around 20. My plan changed because it was snowing and i knew that i wouldn't be able to get home if i stayed in town any longer so i had to go home.

My campaign day was quite succesfull, however i know that if i had tried more i could have got more signatures.

If i was going to do this again i would try and talk to more people and get more signatures and not be so embarrassed.

I am going to bring in my signatures leaflet in on monday and count how many signatures i got. I am then going to try harder to talk to more people and be more outgoing when talking to others.

Plan for today's campaigning

Today i am first going to create a list which i can get people to write their signatures on it. I am then going to go around long road and try to get signatures from people around college. Later on i then plan to go to cambridge and get signatures from people in cambridge. It should approximately take around 30-60 minutes to do get signatures from long road then an hour to do the signatures in cambridge.

What will i discuss with people
here are the following questions i aim to discuss
  • Do you think this is a good campaign
  • Do you like smoothies
  • What is your favourite smoothie
I would use persuasion, personality , information.

i dont know what i expect from today but i want to get as many signatures as possible.
